Origins of Canning

Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned a prize (12,000 francs) for inventing a reliable food preservation method to feed his armies.

The can is born

Nicholas Appert invented a method of preserving food by sealing it in glass bottles. Shortly after, Peter Durand patented the use of tin-plated, wrought-iron cans instead of bottles.

First tin-plated can in the US

The first recorded use of tin cans in the United States. These early cans were bulky and required a separate can opener to access the contents.

First Beverage Can

The American Can Company introduced the first beverage can. Originally used for beer, these beverage cans required a separate tool, the church key, to open.

First Aluminum Can

The first aluminum can was introduced in the US. Aluminum quickly became a popular choice due to its lighter weight and resistance to rust compared to steel cans.

First Self-Opening Can

The pull-tab, or ring-pull, significantly improved convenience by eliminating the need for tools to open cans.

Introduced by Falls City Brewing, the stay-on-tab was a major improvement to the ring-pull, which posed litter and safety issues
