Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned a prize (12,000 francs) for inventing a reliable food preservation method to feed his armies.

1810

The can is born

Nicholas Appert, a French confectioner and brewer, claimed a prize offered by Napoleon Bonaparte by inventing the method of preserving food by sealing it in glass bottles. Shortly after Appert's discovery, Peter Durand of Britain was granted a patent for using tin-plated, wrought-iron cans instead of glass bottles, marking a significant step toward the development of the modern metal can.

First tin-plated can in the US

The first recorded use of tin cans in the United States. These early cans were bulky and required a separate can opener to access the contents.

1935

First Beverage Can

The beverage can made its debut by the American Can Company. These were the first canned beverages (beer specifically) available to the public, marking the beginning of a new era in beverage packaging. These beverage cans required a separate tool, the church key, to open.

First Aluminum Can

The first aluminum can was introduced in the US. Aluminum quickly became a popular choice due to its lighter weight and resistance to rust compared to steel cans.
